Compost your yard waste…it is easy!

Yard waste accounts for nearly one fifth of the debris in landfills.  In the fall, that number can be as high as 50 %.  Since this material is generally clean and biodegradable, it is unnecessary to put dispose of it in the landfill.  By composting, the life of a landfill can be drastically increased and provide beneficial materials to make your garden healthier.

In Brownwood, there are two choices on dealing with your yard debris in a proper manner.

One:  Take it to the City Recycling Center on FM 45 at the entrance of the landfill.  Here the debris is shredded into mulch and offered to community free.  Remember, Texas law requires that you cover your load.  If your load is covered, the recycling center will let you drop off your yard debris free.

Two:  Create a home compost system.  Systems can be as simple to elaborate, as you want. Here is an example of a simple and inexpensive compost system. Materials: 10 feet of chicken wire fencing or metal mesh and wire for securing the ends. Construction: Form the wire into a circle and use the metal wire to secure the ends.  Secure the middle and bottom ends as well.  Place in an area that will get sun and rain.  It is now ready for your leaves.  In the spring, you can simply apply to your garden beds as mulch.

Generally, people are concerned as to what to put into their composting system.
