KBB Educational Information

We know that knowledge is the best tool you can have, and so we try to make our green practices fun and easy to learn.

Composting at Home

Compost is a form of partially decomposed organic matter similar in nature to the organic matter in the soil. It is a humus rich material that results from composting. KBB, along with the City of Brownwood's Sanitation Department, has put together a home compost demonstration site located on FM 45 next to the Recycling Center. It is open for the public, and we encourage you to take a look. In the mean time, we are currently giving away home composting sets to those who attend our home composting classes. The classes are free, fun, and informative. To sign up for a class, join us for our bi-monthly recycling event on the first and third Saturdays of the month under the Austin Ave Overpass at Ave A & Brady between 9am and 1pm. The sign-up sheet will be there. Classes are small to better help you learn. Compost bins are limited supply, and we will let you know when we are out.

If you are unable to attend class, we won't be able to give you a bin, but we can give you some information that will help you get started. Click on the links below to download some brochures about home composting.

Rainwater Harvesting

If you have ever seen your lawn turn yellow while we were under a water restriction, you have wished that you had a way to save water for your landscaping needs. Did you know that rainwater harvesting is an easy and cheap way to save on your water bill and make your neighbors jealous of your green, watered lawn? Click on the link below for more information about rainwater harvesting.

Too Cool! For Schools

We love working with schools and groups, and we love giving our neighbors an environmental education. Please contact us if you would like us to come teach your group or class about: the three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle); composting; litter and its consequences; gardening; insects.

Gardening

We are a partner of the Brownwood Community Garden, and we would love it if you could come join us every Saturday evening at sunset for fun, laughs, and company. Bring refreshments, a joke, a poem or a song, and enjoy the company of your garden neighbors. Did you know that you can lease some garden space and get free gardening tricks and tips from your peers while you grow your own produce? Brownwood Community Garden is a 22,000 square foot garden with sixty-five twenty-foot raised beds, a huge pumpkin and melon patch, an orchard, and a 6,000-gallon rainwater collection system. The Garden's primary mission is to provide fresh, naturally grown produce to area food pantries to feed the hungry. The Garden's secondary purpose is to provide space for residents who wish to garden according to natural, chemical-free methods; to provide a venue for education on sustainable gardening practices; and to provide employment and on-the-job training opportunities for low-income workers. The Garden is located at 1514 Dublin St., behind the Central Texas Opportunities office, in Brownwood. For further information, call 325-784-8453.

Tools for Your Organization

If your organization is looking to start recycling, that's great! Perhaps you heard that all proceeds from recycling cans goes towards the Corinne T. Smith Animal Center's spay/neuter fund. Click here for some industrial-sized recycling products for your organization.

Consider putting that extra dollar into your monthly water payment. For the community, it goes a long way and supports a great cause, a green one.
