Projects

We get our noses in everything, no matter how smelly or dirty that thing may be!

The Green Team

Our group of volunteers is known around town as "The Green Team." You may have seen us at the Brownwood Reunions, picking up trash and separating cans and bottles. Everybody who participates in the big Green Team projects, like helping clean up during the reunion, gets a Green Team t-shirt plus other fun perks. Perks include: people complimenting you on your hard-work, neighbors thanking you for helping them clean up their yards, the mayor congratulating you on being so awesome and helpful, and getting into the Brownwood Reunion for free. To join the Green Team, start attending our monthly meetings and see what interests you. Our meeting information is on this page.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

It seems to be the case that those who receive citations from the city for having unkempt yards just need a little help from a friend to get things under control. Our group has cleaned up many a yard, receiving no more compensation that the smiles and thanks of those we help, and the occasional fresh lemonade. If you or someone you know is in need of a helping hand for a clean-up, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Green Spaces

KBB has developed and continues to maintain green spaces throughout the city. All are on city property, but we are responsible for the design, purchasing of plants, planting, the sprinkler systems, and maintaining the area. We hire out for the basic maintenance of the first five mini parks on the following list for the months of March through November, but supplemental planting, weeding, trimming, raking, etc. still needs to be done by volunteers throughout the course of the year.

List and locations of the mini parks:

  • Brooks and Austin
  • Idlewild and Austin
  • Beaver and Austin
  • Vincent and Ave I
  • Harlow and Fisk
  • Main Street and Leach
  • Community Plaza at Ave B and Brady Ave

Student & Group Projects

Whether you have a child in elementary school or you are attending Howard Payne University, there is a project available with Keep Brownwood Beautiful.

Howard Payne Students: do you have chapel hours to complete, need a service project, or want to be part of a fun and challenging group? Complete this application and email it to kbwdb@verizon.net. HPU students also have helped us out a great deal for S.W.A.R.M.

There are plenty of group projects you can do, including storm drain marking, lake and river clean ups, litter patrol, and assisting at our county-wide cleanups. Kids who are interested in getting their school to start recycling can also contact us for information on how to get started.

In-Town Recycling

Brownwood certainly does recycle, but if you're from a bigger city, you should know we do things a little differently. For starters, you have to bring your recycling to us! We have recycling bins for purchase if you need some. Bring your bins or bags on the first and third Saturday or every month, including holidays, under the Austin Ave Overpass at Ave A & Brady between 9am and 1pm.

We accept the following under the overpass year-round:

  • Glass Bottles/Jars Without Lids
  • Aluminum & Metal Cans
  • Cardboard (Broken Down w/o Packaging
  • Newspaper & Magazines
  • White Office Paper (No Junk Mail)
  • #1 & #2 Plastics w/o Lids
  • Inkjet Cartridges
  • Telephone Books & Catalogs

Unlike in major cities, you must wash out any items you plan on recycling, and we will not take wet paper.

Regarding electronic waste: year round recycling for "E-Waste" is available at the Recycling Center at the entrance of the Landfill on FM 45. Click here for a map to the landfill. Accepted items include: computers, PDAs, cell phones, fax machines, copiers, printers, scanners, VCRs, DVDs, and much more. There is a charge for computer monitors and televisions. We also collect it at our free county-wide cleanups, the dates of which will be announced on our home page. The last county-wide cleanup was held on April 2, 2011. If you missed it, don't despair, you can always take your big items, like refrigerators and tires, to the Landfill year-round, though a small fee may apply.

Consider putting that extra dollar into your monthly water payment. For the community, it goes a long way and supports a great cause, a green one.
