What is KBB? Just what is Keep Brownwood Beautiful and why does it exist? This is a question I am often asked. Simply put, Keep Brownwood Beautiful (KBB) is an organization that encourages and facilitates citizens to work on projects that make Brownwood a better place to live.
An often misperception is that KBB is a department of Brownwood’s city government. KBB collaborates with the city of Brownwood in a variety of ways but is a separate nonprofit group. For example, KBB provides irrigation, plants, and ongoing maintenance for seven green spaces. They are at Beaver and Austin, Brooks and Austin, Idlewild and Austin, Carnegie Esplanade, Fisk and Fourth Street, Vincent and I Street, and Main and Leach. These areas were once vacant or barren areas and prime location for illegal dumping.
KBB also partners with the city in hosting free citywide clean up days in April and October, providing in town recycling on the first Saturday of each month, and decorating for the holidays.
KBB has recently started a new program called the Green Team. This provides systematic support to organizations having events to prevent litter and encourage recycling. In the planning stages of an event, litter and waste is often overlooked yet when planned for, most litter is preventable, thus keeping down time and cost associated with litter removal.
Another new program is Adopt-A-Spot. This gives groups and individuals an opportunity to select areas within Brownwood to make a commitment to clean up three times a year. In return, a sign is posted with the group’s name, supplies are provided and collected debris is removed. It is similar to TxDOT’s adopt a highway program, but within the city limits and generally not as large of areas to clean.
KBB offers a variety of educational classes and opportunities for all ages. Some of the topics include composting, Xeriscaping, recycling, drip irrigation, native plant selection, and litter prevention.
KBB has two main sources for funding. First, KBB receives some support form the City of Brownwood. The second source is the voluntary dollar donation that is on the monthly water/sanitation bill each month. This dollar goes directly to KBB, which in turns reinvests it back into the community. In our cost analysis for last year, it turned out that each dollar KBB spent provided the community with almost $4 worth of services.
KBB exists so citizens can take an active role in their community in regards to beautification, waste management and environmental issues. Research shows that neglect begets litter and greenery begets decreased crime and improved quality of life.
KBB is open to all citizens! We are always looking for more folks to help in projects and improve the services that we provide to Brownwood. Look at KBB’s website at www.keepbrownwoodbeauitful for information on the many programs we have to offer. Together we do make a difference. |
